Set for release August 4th on Steam, Mervils: A VR Adventure from Indi developers Vitruvius will initially offer support for both the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift with future plans for a Playstation VR release.
“Mervils” brings the look of classic platformers to the world of VR and unfolds a very hobbit-like adventure story on the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. Your journey begins in the picturesque Mervil Kingdom, where you learn the history of the jolly Mervil people and of their one great enemy, “Balazar the Evil” who has not been seen in the lands for centuries. You quickly discover that there are 5 vast Mervil Worlds to explore in the Kingdom and that the Worlds are protected by a magical force-field, bound by the Great Mervil Book. Year after year, the power of this Great Book has diminished and now at the time of greatest weakness, Balazar has plotted his return and seeks to destroy you and the rest of the Mervil people. It’s up to one brave hero, to collect the lost pages, rebind the Great Book, and defeat Balazar once and for all. In order to be victorious, your VR specific skills are required.
Challenging VR Quests
Your character explores the 5 worlds in “third-person” accompanied by a jolly Celtic melody throughout. Although, it’s not a solely third-person adventure game, you interact with other Mervils and battle enemies like Darthate the Dragon, Ramaug the Fire Demon, and the Rock Monster, Morax, all from a first-person point of view.
Throughout the Worlds you will need to balance on tight ropes, aim ballistas, launch catapults, throw darts and solve some of the most challenging mind based puzzles. Most of the skills you learn are not accustom to non-VR games and will challenge you to think outside typical 2D boundaries. Despite Balazar’s return, the Kingdom is not always an enemy infested and challenging place, the Mervils are a happy folk, they love to have fun, and each has their own story to tell.
Fun filled Adventure & Exploration
With the 5 portals located around the Mervil Castle, you can easily jump from riding a mine-cart in the Wild West, to skiing slippery slopes in the Arctic, to sailing your Pirate ship and blasting away your enemies in the Tropic World.
With third-person platforming, stylistic worlds reminiscent of Mario 64, a hobbit-like atmosphere, and a powerful enemy that seeks to destroy the very world itself, “Mervils” creates an immersive cartoon community, culture, and fun filled world in VR.
Mervils can currently be played on the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift but a gamepad will be needed to platform throughout the worlds. But that doesn’t mean it’s a sitdown game. Mervils can be played in a standing/ roomscale position and offers a “Blink” and “smooth follow” camera option for a customized and comfortable experience. *Mervils will also be releasing on PlayStationVR this Fall*
