Samsung in partnership with Oculus have been at the forefront of Mobile VR development since 2014 when they first released the Note 4 Gear VR (Innovator Edition). Since 2014 we have seen several versions of the Gear VR come and go and with the upcoming release of the Note 7 Samsung has revealed details for a new version of their mobile powered Virtual Reality headset.

Apart from providing support for the Note 7 this latest version of the Gear VR also a few minor improvements over its predecessors, most notable being an increase in field of view from from 96 to 101 degrees and support for USB Type-C.

The new Gear VR has also had some cosmetic upgrades including a new black colour scheme and the addition of a dedicated menu button located above the touch-pad for quick and easy access to Oculus Home.
For those that already own a Gear VR there is no real incentive to upgrade to this new version but for those who plan on picking up the Note 7 will have no choice as the previous Gear VR versions do not support USB Type-C required by the Note 7.
